Welcome to all those taking part in the WASHPAC pilot
Thank you for volunteering to take part in the trial of Washpac, to help improve and develop it so that many more can benefit.
With focus on our receivers who may be experiencing difficulties with the tactile element of their personal care, Washpac extends this focus to the givers. You, the parents, carers, teachers and perhaps others who routinely deal daily with our receivers with care, persistence and sometimes duty, sometimes love, but always with good intent.
This sensory communication resource is as much for you as it is for the person in your care. All too often the role of the giver is overlooked and underestimated. Not in this case. We try to do this together with our receivers and allow a partnership to develop, eventually with both giver and receiver participating in equal measure. We want to recognise and respect the role you play in the daily exchange with toothbrushes, flannels and hairbrushes.
So put your comments in the feedback forms, tell us what it’s really like for you both, list your top tips and good advice. We look forward to hearing from you – Thank you very much!

WASHPAC Steps
What will we do with our Pilot information?

Zaiba Patel, a doctoral student at the University of Oxford.
The pilot project will run from October 2025 – July 2026. During this time, all participants will be filling in the pre session assessment form, and the post session feedback form. These will be sent back to our researcher. After July 2026, the information will be collated. From this we hope to see what benefits there have been for the receivers, for the givers, and also what improvements to the resource have been suggested by those using it.
Our researcher can then use this information to do a presentation of the results, linking these to current research in personal care and sensory processing.
We hope to produce a user friendly, practical and useful resource for all our members to benefit from, with all the information we’re receiving from this trial.
Thank you for your willingness to pave the way for others !

Powerpoint Presentation
This short power point has all the activities in video, plus explanations as to how to carry out the activities. There are 6 activities, plus the music for the initial setting up of the bathroom with your toiletries. This may also be the bedroom, depending on what you choose to work on.
How to start?
- You could choose one activity that you feel your receiver will feel comfortable with, and familiarise them with the music, the rhythm, and the new way of using this article. (toothbrush, flannel etc). That might be a good way to introduce the routine when you feel you’d like to use something your receiver is not so comfortable with. You could choose together.
- You could choose one activity you feel your receiver is not comfortable with, and the music might make it an easier experience all round.
- Do not rush into this. Make sure your receiver knows what you’re going to do, where the touch will fall and when it will fall. These 2, the touch and music have to happen at the same time.
- When you have both mastered one activity, move on to the next.
Please download this power point.

Yes it has been specially composed. You can’t use any music. The whole point of TACPAC is the alignment of the sensory languages of Touch and Music. (meaning of alignment: makes a balanced and supportive relationship of these two elements to make each one clear, utilised, emphasised and understood. The one needs the other for either to proceed.)
The music has been composed to be aligned with the texture of the objects.
If you use different music, there is no alignment with the touch, and therefore the whole reason for doing a TACPAC session is null and void. You will be doing something – but it won’t be a TACPAC session, with its benefits, insights and communication. Remember TACPAC is about communication, use it to communicate, and you’ll be surprised what it holds for you and your partner. Come on a training to learn how this works.

TACPAC has a unique contextual framework, following a coherent and logical scheme of work which guides the practise and choices the TACPAC practitioner makes during planning, executing and assessing their practise. The unique framework is based on aligning two sensory languages, and learning to communicate through this new language forged by the partnership. The logical rules and laws of music are combined with the equally logical, instinctive rules and laws of touch to form a methodology which is easy to understand, and is inviting to use since it is familiar to us all. The specific procedures and techniques lend themselves to further research.
TACPAC is a sensory communication resource, and as such, the only processing done in a session is sensory. TACPAC works in a partnership of two people of equal status, and these 2 people learn each other’s sensory likes and dislikes, so that communication can be equal and effective. The TACPAC giver will understand that good processing takes place with no distractions, with a reliable and predictable partner, and with the close alignment of the touch to the music. This way sensory processing benefits from seeing, hearing and feeling one message which can then go from giver to receiver.
